Neil Dimmick
UK Teacher with experience in the UAEI am passionate about teaching as I enjoy helping students to achieve academically and improve themselves as people. I have experience of teaching computing to all age ranges, (KG – Post 16). I also have some experience of teaching Business.
I worked at City Academy Bristol, UK, for five years, where I enjoyed helping the young students to achieve their potential in what is considered a challenging inner city school. Over the past 4 years, I have been teaching ICT to primary students at Wesgreen International School, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
I am passionate about students’ learning and also about the subject of Information Technology, therefore I always strive to provide the best learning environment to enable students to meet and surpass their potential. I am always looking for new approaches in the way I teach the subject so that I can bring a fresh enthusiasm into the classroom. I like to take a highly professional approach to teaching and learning. I believe that one of my main strengths is the ability to form good relationship with the students so that they are able to feel that they can learn.
My first experience was gained at City Academy Bristol, which was the first Academy in the South West. It was a very challenging and rewarding environment, and I believe that I achieved great success, as students were often achieving well above their target grades. As well as delivering lessons and courses, I was also responsible for developing many of the resources and schemes of work for both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. I have also taught some Business in this role at Post 16 level.
I was also had a good relationship with other staff members within the department, and we worked very closely doing internal moderations. This allowed us to improve our knowledge of what external moderators are looking for when they mark work. This allowed all the external moderation to pass successfully.
I then gained 3 years of experience of working as a supply teacher throughout many of the schools in South Devon, UK. In the first year I did a lot of general cover. However, in the next two years I had been working constantly an ICT teacher. This has been a great experience, as I have been able to see what life is like in many of different types of schools. I think this helped me to become a more adaptable teacher and given me more skills.
I have spent the past 4 years teaching in United Arab Emirates at Wesgreen International School in Sharjah. My skills were adapted further as I taught ICT in the Primary section, Grade KG2 - 4. In my first year this was shared with teaching grades 5 and 6 in the boys section. I eventually moved to the Primary section, full time. I was responsible for the planning and assessment for all the students.
I was also able to manage the CAT4 and Progress Tests (Maths, English and Science) assessment of the students. I had to make sure that all students took the test and make sure they understand how to do the test.
I am aware of the changes that have happened in the subject over recent years. The subject has branched off into different areas such as Computing and Digital Learning. This means that teachers within this subject have had to improve and expand their subject knowledge as well as changing their approach to how this subject is taught. My own background is more towards ICT as my degree is in Business Information Technology. This means that I have an excellent subject knowledge of Databases, Spreadsheets, etc. However, my recent experience has enabled me to teach Computing, with much more emphasis on Coding (Programming)
